Talk Title

Modelling Extreme-Mass-Ratio Inspirals using Pseudospectral Methods.

Abstract

In this talk, based on [P. Canizares & C.F. Sopuerta, Phys. Rev. D 79, 084020 (2009)], we present a new time-domain numerical method for the computation of the self-force in a simplified model: a charged scalar particle orbiting a nonrotating black hole. Our method uses a multidomain framework based on the pseudospectral collocation method in which the stellar-mass compact object (described as a particle) is located at the interface between two domains. Then, the presence of the particle and its physical effects appear only through appropriate boundary conditions, avoiding in this way the need of resolving a small length scale associated with the particle. Furthermore, this technique also avoids the problems associated with the effect of a low differentiability of the solution on the accuracy of the numerical computations.
