Neutrino astrophysics with IceCube

Abstract

The IceCube neutrino telescope has begun the 3rd season of data-taking with almost 0.75 cubic kilometers of instrumented ice volume. IceCube has been optimized for the detection of neutrinos of TeV energies and above from cosmic-ray acceleration sites such as active galaxies, gamma-ray bursts, and supernova remnants. However, IceCube is also sensitive to the MeV-scale neutrinos which are emitted promptly during core collapse and subsequent explosion of supernovae. The observation of such an event occurring within the Milky Way would provide valuable input for models of core collapse. This talk presents the current status of the experiment, results from the previous years' data runs, and future prospects for detection of neutrinos from supernovae and compact objects.
