Thin Magnetic Hydrogen Atmospheres and the Neutron Star RX J2143.0+0654

Abstract

The spindown rate of the isolated neutron star RX J2143.0+0654 was recently measured by XMM-Newton, and the rate suggests a dipole magnetic field of about 2x10^13 G. Observations also detect spectral features and rotational pulsations. Accurate modeling of the neutron star surface emission in the extreme gravity and magnetic field regime is necessary to properly interpret the spectra and pulse profiles and thus constrain the surface conditions, as well as the nuclear equation of state. We use our latest models for the emission from a thin, magnetic hydrogen atmosphere and simple surface distributions of magnetic field and temperature to test how well the observations can be fit by emission from an atmosphere at B~several x 10^13 G.
