Measuring Black Hole masses in AGN: from Reverberation Mapping to Time Series

Abstract

Since the discovery of quasars and other Active Galactic Nuclei, Super-Massive Black Holes (SMBHs) have been suggested as the most probable explanation for the energy source at their centers. We review the evidence for the SMBH-paradigm in AGN, focusing on two observational methods of determining their mass: reverberation-mapping via dynamics of the Broad Emission Line Regions, and time series analysis, in particular X-ray continuum fluctuations. Our results suggest a common physical mechanism for X-ray variability in accreting stellar Black Holes and AGNs
