Asymptotically Anti deSitter Spacetimes in 3 dimensions

Abstract

We revisit the asymptotically AdS spacetimes in 3 dimensions. We formulate the boundary conditions in a covariant fashion and calculate the central extension in the algebra of conserved charges (first obtained by Brown and Henneaux). The motivation for this work is to understand why the central extensions arise and how one can extend these techniques to formulate the boundary conditions specifying the presence of black hole. This work is a preliminary step towards finding a symmetry based mechanism responsible for the universality of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy as envisioned by Carlip.
