Curvature of a light wave-front in a weak and static gravitational field

Abstract

In this work we present a numerical study of the evolution of a plane 2D electromagnetic wave-front, by tracing light rays that propagate in the curved 3D space corresponding to a relativistic spacetime described by the post-Newtonian approximation of a weak and static gravitational field. Techniques of discrete differential geometry are applied, to obtain estimates of geometrical magnitudes of the different curvatures of the surface wave-front, such as the mean curvature, the Gaussian curvature, the curvature principal directions and a new relative intrinsic curvature. Finally, an estimation of the differences in arrival times due to the curvature of the wave-front is determined.
