Geodetic precession in the young relativistic binary pulsar J1906+0746

Abstract

PSR J1906+0746 is a young relativistic binary pulsar which was discovered with the PALFA survey in Arecibo during 2005. In the framework of the European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA), we used observations from the Lovell Telescope, the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope and the Nancay Radio Telescope to show evidence of geodetic precession for this pulsar. Using the Nancay polarimetric data, we determined the geometry of PSR J1906+0746 and found that the line of sight is moving away from the magnetic pole. We also derived a minimum value of 32° for the misalignment angle between the spin and orbital angular momentum vectors, which can be used to constrain the second supernova.
