Gravitational waves & Relativistic Epicycles |
Abstract |
Calculating the gravitational waves from an EMRI system in a Schwarzschild background consists of several challenges. First of all, the orbit of the smaller object must be determined, preferably in the time-domain. It turns out that this can be done by using the geodesic deviation equations to calculate the corrections to well-known analytical orbits in the time-domain, producing analytical solutions that closely resemble the ancient Ptolemean epicycle system. The next step is to caclulate the gravitational waves; this can be done by using the Regge-Wheeler/Zerilli-Moncrief formalism. As both the epicycle method and the RW/ZM both use the full Schwarzschild background, the results are expected to hold well for the strong field gravity regime. In this talk, I will present the method, results, and future plans. |
