Laguerre-Gauss beams for Third Generation Gravitational Wave Detectors

Abstract

In the drive for higher sensitivity in third generation gravitational wave detectors, the use of Laguerre-Gauss (LG) beams has emerged as a candidate technology to reduce the limiting effects of thermal noise. It has been shown that higher-order LG beams spread the optical power more evenly over a mirror surface, and thus average out thermal fluctuations better than fundamental mode beams. I will present a synopsis of the current state of LG beam preparation technology, and the relative merits of employing LG beams in future gravitational wave detectors. I will detail the potential of this technology as a possible upgrade for advanced detectors and discuss its impact on the design of third generation detectors.
