A Gravito-Electromagnetic Analogy based on Tidal Tensors

Abstract

We present a new formalism [Phys. Rev. D 78 024021, 2008] to explore the physical similarities between General Relativity and Electromagnetism, based on tidal tensors. This approach leads to an exact, covariant form for what are shown to be the physical gravitational analogues of Maxwell equations, which make transparent both the similarities and key differences between the two interactions. Other main results include: an exact derivation of Papapetrou equation for the gravitational force exerted on a gyroscope; explaining Hawking-Wald [PRD 6 406 1972] gravitational spin interaction energy; unveiling an exact matching between gravitational tidal tensors from Ultra-Stationary spacetimes (e.g., the Godel Universe) and covariant derivatives of magnetic fields in curved spaces. Issues concerning other gravito-electromagnetic analogies in the literature are also clarified in this framework.
