Energy ejection in the collapse of a cold spherical self-gravitating cloud

Abstract

I will explain some general aspects of the mechanism of violent relaxation in an open system of classical particles which collapse under the effect of its self-gravity. Such a process has the particularity that an arbitrary amount of energy may in principle be carried away by particles which escape to infinity. I will detail the physical mechanism of this ejection, showing explicitly that it arises from the interplay of the growth of density and velocity fluctuations with the finite size of the system.
