Abstract

The suggestion by R. Laughlin and the author that the surface of compact astrophysical objects corresponds to a quantum critical phase transition of space-time provides a simple explanation for why string-like excitations in a warped space-time provide an alternative description of quantum critical behavior in certain kinds of many body systems. In the case where the interior space-time can be approximately described as rotating de Sitter space, the warped space-time resembles anti-de Sitter space. The appropriate quantum critical behavior is unusual for non-relativistic condensed matter, but the chiron theory of the superfluid transition in high Tc superconductors may be a reasonable model for the surface of compact objects. This model also illustrates the importance of SU(oo)gauge fields for emergent space-time.
