Abstract |
We study photospheric emission from ultra-relativistic outflows, the first electromagnetic signal detectable from Gamma-Ray Bursts. A new classification is introduced: photon thick and photon thin outflows. We compute observed flux and spectra for both cases. In the photon thick case the photosphere is a dynamic surface and its geometry determines the shape of the light curve. The spectrum is nearly thermal. The emission emerging from the photon thin outflow is shown to be dominated by diffusion. Most radiation leaves the outflow before it reaches the photospheric radius. The time integrated spectrum is shown to be non-thermal. |
