Title

D-dimensional shock wave perturbation theory at higher orders and radiation extraction
Co-authors Flávio S. Coelho, Carlos Herdeiro, Carmen Rebelo

Abstract

In this talk I will present a higher order generalization of a perturbative method to find the metric after the collision of two Aichelburg-Sexl gravitational shock waves in D-dimensions. A central challenge is to extract a higher order estimate for the amount of gravitational radiation emitted in the collision. Therefore I will present an adaptation of the Bondi mass loss formula in D-dimensions, which allows us to obtain an expression valid non-perturbatively, for axially symmetric asymptotically flat space-times in de Donder gauge. This method is shown to coincide with the Landau-Lifshitz pseudo tensor at first order in perturbation theory. I will also comment on the validity of the perturbative method using an example of charged shock wave collisions, and on current efforts to obtain the second order numerical results.
