Analysis of the quiescent optical emission of SGR 0418+5729 and 4U 0142+61 within the WD model for SGRs and AXPs

Abstract |
We analyze the optical emission in the quiescent state of SGR 0418+5729 and 4U 0142+61. We derive constraints on the surface temperature and radius of the emitter assuming a simple black body spectral model. We use the recent mass-radius relation of general relativistic uniformly rotating White Dwarfs of Boshkayev et al. 2012, and show that the observational constraints are in full agreement with a White Dwarf description for SGR 0418+5729 and 4U 0142+61, as proposed by Malheiro et al. 2012. |

The SN-GRB connection in GRB 090618 and GRB 970828

Abstract |
The presence of a double episode emission in GRB 090618 and GRB 970828, and the evidence of a Supernova after 10 days from the GRB trigger in GRB 090618, confirm an alternative paradigm for the GRB-SN connection: the induced gravitational collapse of a Neutron Star to a Black Hole by a SN Ib/c in a close binary system. The first thermal episode emission is associated to the early expansion of the Supernova Ib/c while the following GRB emission is due to the Neutron Star that reaches in a few seconds the critical mass and then collapse to a Black Hole. We report here the cases of these two GRBs and underline the main observational features. |

Hints for a physically based GRB distance indicator

Abstract |
In recent years several methods had been proposed to use GRBs as possible distance indicators. All of them are based on the existence of correlations between GRB spectroscopic and photometric observables. In this talk we propose a new method based on the existence of a subclass of GRBs, characterized by the presence of a double episode emission and an underlying Supernova emission component, observed usually about ten days from the GRB trigger. This physical bound leads to a standard emission for the late soft X-ray afterglow. From the observed data it is then possible to estimate the redshift of GRBs and use them as distance indicators. We present here the case of GRB 101023. |
