The Mystery of gamma Cas-type X-ray Sources | |||||
Co-authors | ||||||||
Abstract |
Until recently gamma Cas stood alone as the major exception to our understanding of the X-ray emission from massive stars. In the last years, however, a growing number of 'gamma Cas-like' objects has been unveiled by X-ray telescopes suggesting the existence of an entire new class of X-ray sources. The nature of their X-ray emission remains a mistery. Two hypothesys have been put forward: accretion onto a degenerate companion (a White Dwarf) or, alternatively, the interaction of the circumstellar disk with the star's magnetic field. Both explanations challenge our current understanding of the structure and evolution of massive stars. In this talk, I will review the state of the field with special emphasis on the last discoveries. |
