Observational signatures of sub-photospheric shocks in GRBs | |||||

Abstract |
I will discuss the structure and emission of radiation mediated shocks that form below the photosphere of a GRB outflow. I will argue that unlike collisionless shocks, radiation mediated shocks cannot accelerate particles to nonthermal energies, as their characteristic scale, a few Thomson depths, is larger than any kinetic scale involved by several orders of magnitudes. I will present recent calculations of the spectrum emitted from photosphere following shock breakout, and elucidate the dependence of the spectral shape on the temperature profile downstream of the shock. |
