Tidal effects on binary neutron star coalescence

Abstract

We study the gravitational waveform of binary neutron star inspirals by using numerical-relativity simulations. The extrapolated gravitational waveforms are compared with the waveforms of the analytic descriptions, i.e., the post-Newtonian formalism and the effective-one-body formalism including the tidal corrections. As a result, we show that the waveforms of the numerical-relativity and those of the analytic descriptions are consistent in the early phase of the inspiral. Subsequently, the binary system proceeds to the tidally dominated inspiral phase, where it evolves slightly faster than the evolution expected from the analytic description. Our results imply the tidal effects in the late inspiral phase are stronger than those expected from the analytic approach.
