Constrained simulations of clusters and the cosmic web

Abstract

Constrained simulations of Gaussian random fields are a continuing topic of study. After the burst of activity in the 90's, the field has gradually evolved into its current state. Still, there are important questions that remain unresolved with respect to their use in cosmology and the study of the large scale structure of the universe. The initial conditions of the universal density field may very well have been Gaussian in nature and are thus an interesting subject for constraining to suit our purposes. However, the evolution of the density field, due to gravity, at late times is highly non-linear. It is a great challenge to disentangle these late time effects to be able to retrace our steps towards the initial conditions. To give a concrete example: we cannot easily constrain our initial conditions in such a way that we regain the universe as we see it around us today. In this talk, we will explore this issue.
