Abstract |
Voids have been known as a feature of the galaxy distribution since the first surveys were compiled. In this review, I will discuss why voids are cosmological objects of key importance. They are a prominent aspect of the Megaparsec Universe, instrumental in the spatial organization of the Cosmic Web. Recent work has also shown they contain a considerable amount of information on the underlying cosmological scenario. This makes them clean probes of cosmological parameters, the nature of dark matter and in particular the nature of dark energy. Also, the pristine low-density environment of voids represents an ideal and pure setting for the study of galaxy formation and the influence of cosmic environment on the formation of galaxies. We will shortly discuss recent results by the Void Galaxy Survey. |
