Abstract |
The dynamics of stellar capture by a central massive black hole (the "loss-cone problem") determine the rate of tidal disruption and gravitational wave flares, and importantly, the rate of gradual inspiral events, which result in the emission of quasi-periodic gravitational wave signals. I will describe recent numerical and analytical results, which reveal a rich structure of dynamical effects, often surprising and counter-intuitive, which result from the interaction of relativistic dynamics and classical incoherent and coherent relaxation mechanisms. I will discuss possible implications, on-going research directions and open questions. |
