Abstract |
White dwarfs have recently attracted attention as one of the candidates of cosmic-ray acceleration sites with Suzaku discovery of sharp X-ray pulsations from AE Aquarii. However, spectral analysis with Suzaku is difficult because the signals are statistically poor. Therefore we plan to observe AE Aquarii with the NuSTAR satellite. NuSTAR will carry the first focusing hard X-ray telescopes to orbit in June 2012 and detect hard X-rays about two orders of magnitude fainter than those detected by Suzaku. The sensitivity improvement will allow to distinguish whether the hard X-ray spectrum is thermal or non-thermal continuum. In the case of the non-thermal X-rays, we can estimate energy and density of accelerated electrons by assuming the synchrotron radiation mechanism. We also discuss a possibility to detect X-ray polarization of white dwarfs with the future X-ray polarization observatories. |
