Distortion of neutron stars with a toroidal magnetic field | |||||

Abstract |
We have studied effects of rotation and a toroidal magnetic field on relativistic stars. Non-rotating models admit arbitrary levels of magnetization accompanied by an unlimited growth of size and quadrupole distortion. Moreover, rotating models reach the mass-shedding limit at smaller angular velocities corresponding to the larger radius induced by the magnetic field and admit a classification of prolate-prolate, prolate-oblate, and oblate-oblate with respect to quadrupole distortion and surface deformation. We have derived empirical distortion coefficients which allow to compute both quantities by means of a simple formula. Previous Newtonian estimates exceed the quadrupole distortion by about a factor of five proving them to be inadequate to describe relativistic objects like neutron stars. |
