Galaxy Peculiar Velocities and the Local Void | |||||

Abstract |
Our most accurate information on the details of galaxy flows is local. There are two dominant characteristics to galaxy motions in our immediate neighborhood. One is that the galaxies within our local structure are all moving together in co-moving coordinates with little dispersion. The second is that there is an abrupt discontinuity in velocities beyond our structure. It is now understood that our structure is part of the wall of a very large void, that we are participating in the expansion of this void, but that neighboring structures are not. This interesting situation gives us important information about the void phenomenon. |
