Title

Physical Models for Gravity Probe B Data Analysis

Abstract

The recently published results of Gravity Probe B (GP-B) Relativity Science mission required a rather sophisticated analysis of experimental data caused by several unexpected complications discovered on orbit. The major three of them were the changing gyro polhode period; the significantly larger than expected patch effect torques, and the data segmentation due to spacecraft anomalies. Their combination made the problem of estimation of relativistic gyro drift rate nonlinear, and brought in the need in the theoretical derivation of a number of measurement models for various signals involved. In this paper we give a brief overview of the whole set of models used in the analysis of various signals, in particular, of high and low frequency SQUID signal of GP-B magnetic readout, of the telescope signal tracking the guide star, and of gyro motion in the presence of patch effect torques.
