Title

Accretion and growth of supermassive black holes
Co-authors

Abstract

The centre of almost every galaxy hosts a supermassive black hole. There is good evidence that the holes were able to grow to large masses on rather short timescales, and did so through luminous accretion. But the viscous timescale for even modest-sized accretion discs approaches a Hubble time. I discuss ways in which this angular momentum barrier may be overcome, and how the black hole growth is related to the evolution of the host galaxy.
