Abstract |
Detection of gravitational waves (GW) will soon be a reality, opening a completely new window on the Universe. Massive black holes (MBH) binaries (MBHBs) are expected to be among the primary actors on this upcoming stage. I review our current understanding of MBH(B) formation and evolution during the cosmic history, I will discuss detectability with planned space interferometers (eLISA) and ongoing and forthcoming pulsar timing arrays. In particular I will present GW observations as a powerful astrophysical tool, that will enable us to better understand the physics of the formation, dynamics and cosmic evolution of MBHs. |
