Quanta : the originality of Einstein's approach to relativity? | |||||

Abstract |
In his preface to Stachel's book Einstein's miraculous year, R. Penrose claims: «To me it is virtually inconceivable that [Einstein] would have put forward two papers in the same year which depended upon hypothetical views of nature [waves / quanta] that he felt were in contradiction with each other». We study the role played by the quanta in Einstein's relativity, which has puzzled historians of science (A. Miller, A. Païs, ...). The formulation of the June 1905 second postulate (velocity of light independent of the source motion) and the emission of light complex are more intelligible if one has in mind Einstein's dual vision of light; in particular, the relativistic invariance of c is a necessity for that of the quanta theory. In 1911, the quanta will have to obey the equivalence principle. |
