Abstract |
We intend to present in 2012 a brief history (1900-1912) of the energy-momentum tensor which has played an major role in Einstein's geometrical approach to gravitation between 1912 an 1915 (topic of a future presentation in 2015?). This story is also that of relativistic mechanics, which is far from being fully established in 1905-1907, despite the remarkable works of Lorentz, Poincaré, Einstein and Planck. In a first part, we describe how the electromagnetic origin of inertia (Wien-Abraham program based on Maxwell's theory) has evolved into mass-energy equivalence. In a second part, we show how the dynamics of a point mass has been better understood when generalized to that of continuous media (Planck, Minkowski, Laue, ). |
