Title

GRB Central Engine: Collapsar vs. Magnetar

Abstract

I will describe the main features of the GRB central engine and provide a critical overview of the two leading models. One of which is the accretion onto a newly formed blackhole resulting from the core collapse of the progenitor star. And the other model is radiation from a newly formed milli-second neutron-star with a very strong magnetic field (magnetar). The steep decline of x-ray lightcurve followed by a plateau should be able to discriminate between these models. This will be discussed at some length. The various observed correlations for the GRB prompt emission parameters should also shed light, in principle, on the workings of the central engine. I will briefly discuss how due to the lack of our understanding of the jet energy dissipation and prompt radiation mechanisms this "inversion" has not yet been realized.
