Title

Phenomenology of QED vacuum in presence of strong magnetic fields
Co-authors

Abstract

Quantum vacuum in the presence of strong magnetic fields behaves as a non linear optical medium. We are currently taking data with our experiment "BMV (Birefringence Magnètique du Vide)" whose goal is to observe for the first time the vacuum magnetic birefringence. As far as astrophysics is concerned, we also predicted that vacuum should become magnetised in the neighbourhoods of highly magnetised neutron stars in such a way to induce a braking on the rotating star. This Quantum Vacuum Friction should affect the spindown evolution of the star. After having presented a brief status of our terrestrial laboratory experiment, I will detailed how to test the existence of the quantum vacuum effect in higly magnetised neutron stars.
