RX J0648.0-4418: The fastest-spinning white dwarf | |||||

Abstract |
The white dwarf in the binary system HD49798/RXJ0648.0-4418 is particularly interesting because it is the one with the shortest observed spin-period (P=13 s) and one of the most massive white dwarfs with a dynamical mass measurement (1.28+/-0.05 solar masses). I will review the observational data that led to the discovery of this fast-spinning white dwarf, present the results of recent observations to characterize the peculiar properties of its X-ray emission, and discuss the relevance of this post common-envelope binary as a possible progenitor of Type Ia supernovae or non-recycled millisecond pulsars. |
