Title |
Influence of the magnetic field configuration on the magneto-ellastic oscillations of magnetars | |||||

Abstract |
Magneto-elastic oscillations have been proposed as an explanation for the quasi-periodic oscillations appearing in the decaying tail of the giant flares of soft gamma-ray repeaters. So far, all existing investigations have only considered a very limited set of magnetic field configurations, a situation which leaves incomplete the assessment of the model. In this talk we explore a wide range of plausible magnetic field configurations and discuss its influence on the oscillation spectrum. We also present estimates of the magnetic field strength of magnetars by associating the fundamental Alfvén oscillations of the continuum with some of the observed frequencies. Our simulations seem to rule out magnetic field configurations confined to the crust. |
