Population studies of X-ray sources in Local Group galaxies | |||||

Abstract |
Deep observations of the X-ray camera EPIC on board the XMM-Newton observatory covered the prominent Local Group neighbouring galaxies of the Milky Way. The detected sources have been classified and partly identified using their X-ray properties and informations from observations in many wavelengths. In this talk I will mainly concentrate on lessons learned from observations of high mass X-ray binaries (many in the Small Magellanic Cloud) and from the supersoft source emission of optical novae in the Andromeda galaxy. This will demonstrate the importance of X-ray surveys of nearby galaxies for a better understanding of X-ray source populations in the Milky Way. |
