Abstract |
The Italian physicist Edoardo Amaldi (1908-1989) was the main collaborator of Enrico Fermi in Rome, working in nuclear physics, before the second World War, in a group of young scientists lead by Fermi which included Emilio Segrè, Ettore Majorana, Bruno Pontecorvo and Franco Rasetti, a group known as "Via Panisperna Boys". In the afterwar period, Amaldi was the protagonist of the renaissance of the Italian physics and gave fundamental contributions to particle and astroparticle physics. He also played a key role in the setting up of CERN and of the European Space Agency, and in promoting arms control. The role of Amaldi in the birth of the gravitational wave research in Italy will be outlined. It is significant that the cornerstone conference of the GW community worldwide today bears his name. |
