Abstract |
Infinite dimensional algebras often appear in theoretical physics. Here we show how to realize an infinite dimensional algebra which contains several Virasoro and U(1) Kac-Moody algebras in the vicinity of a generic rotating extremal black hole horizon in four and higher dimensions. We construct a phase space of smooth metrics which forms a representation of the algebra. These near-extremal black hole geometries contain a Liouville-type field whose stress-tensor equips any rotating extremal black hole with ``Virasoro hair'', namely conserved charges associated with the generalized Virasoro algebra. |
