Title

Extended Gravity in EPS Formalism
Coauthors Fatibene, Lorenzo; Garruto, Simon

Abstract

I shall consider and briefly review Palatini f(R)-gravity in view of Ehlers-Pirani and Schild (EPS) framework. Mathematical and physical equivalence with other models (Brans-Dicke and modified gravity) will be discussed showing that the equivalence between variational principles needs extra assumptions to be promoted to a full physical equivalence. We shall present a toy model to show that without such extra assumptions, even equivalent variational principles may be physically quite different. I finally argue that Palatini f(R)-theories have often been dismissed too quickly on the basis of too simplistic arguments and that, even if they would be eventually found wrong and standard GR will be fully confirmed, they clarify a lot about foundation of gravitational theories and the relation between them and observable quantities.
