Abstract |
Analysis of absorption systems towards distant QSOs are currently suggesting possible spatial variations in the fine-structure constant. However, the use of solar spectrum allowed the discovery of systematic distortions in the wavelength scales of high-resolution spectrographs with characteristics capable to explain the evidence for the spatial variations, altough a certain conspirancy is required. We present here an high resolution high signal-to-noise ratio UVES spectra at the Very Large Telescope, to study of the l.o.s towards the quasar QSO J2136- 4308 to test of this evidence. By directly comparing close-by transitions detected in QSO J2136-4308 we bypass the wavelength distortion systematic . The QSO has a z_em= 2.42 and several intervening absorption systems at z_abs=0.540, 0.794, 1.435, 1.556, 1582 and 1.915. For each set of lines we measure the relative deviation from the current laboratory value. |
