Thermal mass limit of neutron cores

Abstract

The dependence on temperature of the original Oppenheimer-Volkoff calculation, namely the ideal neutron cores maximum mass, will be presented. To this end will be studied static thermal equilibrium of a quantum self-gravitating ideal gas in general relativity, taking into account the Tolman-Ehrenfest effect. At low temperatures, the Oppenheimer-Volkoff calculation will be recovered. At high temperatures is reported an ultimate upper mass limit of 2.4 solar masses. Neutron cores with masses equal to the observational upper mass limit of 2 solar masses are found to correspond to temperatures of about 180MeV. These high temperatures are relevant to protoneutron stars, formed only seconds after a supernova explosion.
