Abstract

We study the scenario in which a massive particle is thrown into a rapidly rotating Kerr black hole in an attempt to spin it up beyond its extremal limit (``overspin''), challenging weak cosmic censorship. Previous works showed that, in the test-particle approximation, it is possible to find such overspinning orbits. We examine how the inclusion of back-reaction affects this scenario. We work at first order in black-hole perturbation theory, and focus on non-spinning, uncharged particles sent in on equatorial orbits. We find that the first order gravitational self-force acts in favour of cosmic censorship: the black hole cannot be driven beyond extremality, but only saturated at most. Saturation can be achieved only within a subclass of critical orbits. In this specific case, the second order self-force appears to be required in order to obtain a conclusive answer to the problem.
