Title

Observed Merger Rate of White Dwarf Binaries
Coauthors M. Kilic

Abstract

The strongest known gravitational wave sources in the mHz regime are double degenerate binaries containing extremely low mass <0.3 Msun white dwarfs (WDs). Such objects only form in ultra-compact binaries, and in the last few years we have published over 80 low mass WD binaries from our targeted ELM Survey. The shortest orbital period systems will contact in 1 million yr. In this talk I will present the observed merger rate of low mass WD binaries, and compare this rate with possible end products such as under-luminous supernovae.

Observed Merger Rate of White Dwarf Binaries

Abstract

The strongest known gravitational wave sources in the mHz regime are double degenerate binaries containing extremely low mass <0.3 Msun white dwarfs (WDs). Such objects only form in ultra-compact binaries, and in the last few years we have published over 80 such binaries from our targeted ELM Survey. The shortest orbital period systems will contact in 1 million yr. In this talk I will present the inferred merger rate of these WD binaries, and compare this rate with possible end products such as under-luminous supernovae.
