Title

Nonlinear effects and coarse-graining in general relativity
Coauthors

Abstract

When do the relativistic, non-linear corrections to the large-scale effective stress energy tensor matter in general relativity? I present two exact examples in which the corrections turn out to be important: the first one, in which the matter is distributed in the form of a collection of very compact objects, and second one, where continuous a distribution of dust contains perturbations in the form of nested voids and overdense regions extending over many scales. I will discuss the magnitude of non-linear corrections to the coarse-grained energy density and show that they are large when the matter tends to cluster on the small scales.
