GRMHD simulations of binary neutron star mergers and the central engine of short gamma-ray bursts | |||||

Abstract |
I will review recent fully general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations of binary neutron star mergers performed with the Whisky code. I will in particular describe how these GRMHD simulations are helping us in studying the possible engine of short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs), both in the "standard" scenario, in which a black hole (BH) is promptly formed after collapse, and in the "time-reversal" scenario, which instead requires the formation of a long-lived magnetar. I will also discuss the gravitational wave (GW) signals that will be emitted by these sources and that, together with electromagnetic observations, will allow us to validate these SGRB models. |
