Title

Generalized Virasoro symmetries near extremal black hole horizons
Coauthors

Abstract

Infinite dimensional algebras often appear in theoretical physics. Here we show how to realize an infinite dimensional algebra which contains several Virasoro and U(1) Kac-Moody algebras in the vicinity of a generic rotating extremal black hole horizon in four and higher dimensions. We construct a phase space of smooth metrics which forms a representation of the algebra. These near-extremal black hole geometries contain a Liouville-type field whose stress-tensor equips any rotating extremal black hole with ``Virasoro hair'', namely conserved charges associated with the generalized Virasoro algebra.
