Title

Gravitational Wave Polarization Modes in f(R) Theories
Coauthors

Abstract

The direct detection of gravitational waves and the corresponding determination of polarization modes is a powerful tool to test general relativity and alternative theories of gravity as for instance f(R) theories. Working within the framework of the linearized approach, we investigate the polarization of gravitational waves in f(R) theories. We show that, besides the usual two transverse-traceless tensor modes present in general relativity, there are in general two additional ones: a massless transverse mode and a massive longitudinal mode (the so-called scalar modes). Our findings are thus consistent with the results found in the literature using the Newman-Penrose formalism. We also explore some consequences of those two additional modes on the detection of gravitational waves.
