Title

Magnetic white dwarfs: the
Coauthors

Abstract

A small fraction of white dwarfs exhibit fields ranging from ~10kG to ~1000MG, and I will review the extensive body of observational studies of these stars. The detection of Zeeman-split lines in the photospheric spectra of white dwarfs provides the unrivalled opportunity to test fundamental physics in the regime of extreme fields. Magnetic effects have been detected for a wide range of atmospheric elements, including hydrogen, helium, carbon, calcium, magnesium, and sodium. Time-resolved observations of a handful of white dwarfs have been used to infer their field topologies, which can deviate significantly from simple dipole structures.
