Title

A Broadband Detection Algorithm for LIGO-Virgo Searches of Long Gravitational-wave Bursts in Energetic Core-Collapse Supernovae

Abstract

We review the potential of energetic core-collapse supernovae (CC-SNe) as sources of long gravitational wave bursts for LIGO-Virgo and KAGRA associated with newly born rapidly rotating black holes, based on SN1987A and long GRBs in the catalogues of BATSE, BeppoSAX and Swift. Broadband emission in gravitational waves is expected from quasi-monochromatic high frequency chirps produced by non-axisymmetric instabilities in accretion flows down to the ISCO in energetic CC-SNe, especially so in the Type Ib/c progenitors of long GRBs. Readily discovered using optical surveys of the Local Universe, we argue that their event rate is competitive with mergers of neutron stars and black holes, if the fraction producing an energetic output in gravitational waves merely exceeds 1%. We describe a radically new broadband detection algorithm by application of matched filtering to the gravitational strain detector output of LIGO-Virgo and KAGRA, using about 10 million templates implemented by massively parallel computing. In original form, this method successfully detected broadband turbulence up to 1 kHz in the 2 kHz light curves of bright long GRBs in the BeppoSAX catalogue. Some preliminary tests will be presented on injection experiments in synthetic shot noise, representative for the upcoming advanced gravitational wave detectors. The results indicate a sensitivity range up to about 100 Mpc.
