Asymptotically Thermal Responses for Smoothly Switched Detectors

Abstract

Thermality in quantum field theory can be measured with the use of particle detectors and is manifest when the detailed balance version of the KMS condition is satisfied. This relation can hold exactly for stationary detectors interacting eternally with a quantum field, e.g. in the Hawking and Unruh effects. Operationally, however, a detector interacts with the field through a switching function of compact support for a finite amount of time. By studying in detail the case of a Rindler detector, we prove that the KMS condition cannot hold exactly for finite time interactions. Moreover, we show that, for a class of switching functions whose Fourier transform decays sufficiently fast, an \textit{asymptotic KMS condition} can be achieved if the interaction time is polynomial in the detector energy gap scale in the large energy regime.
