An Observational Review Of Short Gamma-Ray Bursts

Abstract

Following the most accredited model, short GRBs originate from the coalescence of compact binary systems (two neutron stars or neutron star-black hole). This coalescence scenario can be firmly confirmed on one hand from multiband observational campaigns aimed at the detection of the so-called "kilo nova" and, on the other hand, by the detection of a short GRB by one of the new generation gravitational waves detectors that will start operating in the near future. To this end, the estimate of the collimation (jet opening angle) of the short GRB emission is crucial to derive their true event rate. I'll present a review of the observational properties of short GRBs, and show how the study of these properties can be used as a tool to unveil their elusive progenitors and provide information on the nature of the central engine powering the observed emission of these sources.
