Planck scale physics, Dark Matter, and Stability of the EW vacuum

Abstract

According to the usual analysis, the stability condition of the electroweak (EW) vacuum mainly depends on the values of the Higgs and top masses (M_H and M_t), and this is normally presented with the help of a stability phase diagram in the M_H-M_t plane. For the present experimental values of M_H and M_t, the EW vacuum turns out to be matastable. Dark Matter models have been proposed to stabilize the vacuum. Needless to say, for Beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics this is a crucial issue. The usual analysis, however, misses an important effect. In fact, it was previously thought that New Physics that lives at very high energy scales cannot have an impact on the stability diagram. Contrary to this expectation, it has been recently shown that the stability condition of the EW vacuum crucially depends on the presence of New Physics, even if it lives at very high scales. I will present these results and discuss the consequences for BSM physics. Moreover, I will show that, despite claims to the contrary, more precise determinations of M_H and M_t will not allow to decide whether our universe lives in a metastable or in a stable state. The Higgs inflation scenario and the so called "Higgs Criticality" will also be discussed in the light of these results.
